Zimmer Gender Solutions: Case study 1–Eileen
Eileen, from Chichester, has made history by being one of the first women in the UK to receive the new Zimmer® Gender Solutions™ knee implant - designed specifically to fit the shape of a female knee.
Now retired, 76-year-old Eileen is a keen gardener, but problems with her knee have prevented her from enjoying her favourite hobby and other activities owing to the severe discomfort she has experienced.
Eileen comments, "The pain in my knee restricted my ability to walk or even stand for any period of time and it was also affecting my back and other knee as well. I found it hard to do many things, which was very distressing.”
Eileen decided to opt for a knee replacement operation in March 2007 at the ChichesterNuffieldHospital. She spent five days in hospital under the care of a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, who currently co-leads the group of surgeons pioneering the Zimmer Gender Solutions knee implant in the UK.
She continues, "The improvement since my operation has been excellent. I am
improving daily and can bend my knee much better. My back and the other knee
have improved. It’s
still early days, but I’m already walking so much better than I did before my
operation and the pain has reduced significantly”.
