Tim Baynard: NexGen Mini Incision
Tim Barnard from Winchmore Hill has made UK history by being the first patient to leave hospital in less than two days, following a total knee replacement operation.
|
65 year old Tim went into theatre on the afternoon of Thursday 20th November 2003 and left hospital only 45 hours after his surgery on Saturday 22nd November. Tim's short stay in hospital was made possible due to a revolutionary new procedure called the NexGen MIS™ Mini-Incision Knee Procedure that has been developed by Zimmer. Tim says: "I was amazed to be out of hospital so quickly and my knee is infinitely better than it has been. I can already walk further than I could before the operation. I was walking without sticks after only 3 days and was back in the car and driving after just 6 days! Before the operation my knee was so bad that even sitting down was very painful. |
|
"I'm a very active man and used to be a keen cyclist, runner and swimmer. In more recent years my attention has turned to serious DIY and together with my children I have increased the size of a one of my son's house by 110%! My knee problems virtually put a stop to that and now I'm really looking forward to climbing ladders and carrying buckets of cement again! The Physio is really pleased with my progress."
Tim has been married for 41 years to Kath and they have five sons and five granddaughters.
MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure: Faster, Less Painful Recovery
The Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure is a new, pioneering alternative to a conventional knee replacement procedure, carried out through Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) It allows surgeons to cut less muscle, which causes less damage.
The procedure uses the same traditional, proven knee implants to be inserted through one incision that can be as small as ten to twelve centimetres long. In standard knee surgery this incision, or cut, can be as long as 30 cm.
By using this Minimally invasive procedure the need to cut the thigh muscle is reduced and less tissue trauma is applied to the knee cap soft tissue. The Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure is different to a standard knee replacement procedure. Because of this, some additional specialised instruments are needed.
The potential benefits of Zimmer MISTM Mini-Incision Knee Procedure include:
- Less tissue trauma - muscle cuts are reduced
- Faster and less painful rehabilitation
- Smaller incisions and less scarring 10-12cm rather than the standard 20-30cm incision
- Shorter hospital stay -As little as 2 days compared with 8 days for a standard knee replacement procedure
- Less blood loss during surgery so less need for a transfusion
- May allow a faster return to work

- Only surgeons that have received guidance and training by Zimmer can perform the Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure.
- The Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure is available on the NHS. However, availability is currently limited. 35-40 surgeons are expected to be performing the procedure by the end of 2004
- As with any surgical procedure, including conventional knee replacement, not everyone is a candidate for the Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure.
- People with pre-existing medical conditions that increase their surgical risk are unlikely candidates for the Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision Knee Procedure.
- The final decision about whether or not to perform the procedure rests with the consultant
