“Within 4 hours I walked down the ward”

After Zimmer’s MIS 2-Incision Hip Replacement Procedure

“My first hip replacement operation took place on the 19th December, and the operation was performed in the afternoon.  I stayed in the hospital for 11 nights and 12 days.  (This time, for the second hip) The doctor explained to me that I was going to have a different kind of procedure and it would be Minimal Invasive Surgery.  He explained the process to me and hoped he could do it for me.  Then I was called in 3 days later.  I went in on the Monday for my operation, at 7 o’clock, had a check-up which was fine.  The next morning at 8.45 I went down for surgery.  Within 4 hours I walked down the ward with the aid of two physiotherapists.  Totally amazing!

“The surgeon  explained that there had been two incisions, one on the outside of my hip and the other in my groin.  The wonderful part about it, he felt was, that he wouldn’t cut any muscle.  Now I realise that that was the most painful part of the procedure when I had it done in the traditional way.

“I think from a medical point of view, it was so much better, because the main muscles from the groin to my knee were not cut at all.  I had hardly any bruising.  It was sore yes, but it wasn’t dreadfully painful at all.  To be back in my own home going up in my bed in a day…walking up the stairs and being in my own bed. That was wonderful.

“One of the reasons I really wanted to have this done – because I thought quite a bit about it.  The fact that, maybe other people will be able to have this done in time to come and they won’t be on the waiting lists for 18 months or 2 years.  Not being able to really have, - in quotes – a normal life. “
