Trilogy AB

We are excited to announce the introduction of the new ceramic on ceramic bearing system; the Trilogy AB™ (Alternate Bearing) Acetabular System. The key issue in total hip arthroplasty is wear, and Zimmer, Inc. is proud to announce another significant step toward addressing this issue. The Trilogy AB Acetabular System incorporates the proven performance of alumina/ alumina ceramic bearing couples and the excellent history of the Harris/Galante (HG) hemispherical porous cup. The Trilogy AB Acetabular System is indicated for use in either cemented or noncemented hip arthroplasty.

This system is designed to provide a complete alternate bearing solution for surgeons.

The alternate bearing segment of the total hip arthroplasty market continues to grow as surgeons look to advanced bearing technologies to address the issue of wear. This continues to be the foremost issue in the mind of the surgeon and the most common reason for aseptic loosening of hip implants. The Trilogy AB Acetabular System combines the successful clinical history of the hemispherical fiber metal porous coated shell (HG-I and HGP-II) and the latest improvements in ceramic bearing technology to provide a complete solution.

Ceramic bearing couples have long been recognized as one solution to the issue of wear. A comparison of ceramic-on-ceramic to other available bearing couples was presented by Greenwald and Garino  at the 2nd Annual Symposium on Alternate Bearing Surfaces in Total Joint Replacement. These materials are significantly harder than UHMWPE and metals used in hip arthroplasty. As a result, wear debris is minimal with these bearing surfaces. The wear properties of alumina/alumina are also enhanced by a lower fluid contact angle as compared to metals. A reduced contact angle indicates a greater tendency for fluids to wet the surface of a material. As a result, the lubricating properties of synovial fluids are enhanced with ceramics.
