Exercising and Gardening Again after MIS Quad-Sparing TKA

Martha Morris had such severe knee pain that she had to give up the activities she loved, including exercising, painting, and walking her dog.

“Each time I put my foot on the ground, the pain was excruciating,” said Martha, 60, who lives in Alabama.

Martha attributes her knee problems to having been born with bowed legs, followed by years of an active lifestyle. “I played a lot of sports when I was younger, and I was a long-distance runner. I also taught high-impact aerobics, and these activities took a toll on my knees,” she said.

I even danced at a wedding and sent a photograph to my surgeon. It felt great.”

Now Martha walks 10 miles a day, does Pilates and lifts weights to strengthen her upper body. She also enjoys painting and gardening again. The scars are so small she says people who see them can’t believe she’s had total knee replacement surgery.

More About Knee Surgery

* Quad-Sparing TKA outcomes depend on each patient’s personal circumstances. As with any total joint replacement surgery, the outcome can depend on individual factors like weight, activity level, bone quality, and how well the physical therapy routine is followed after surgery. Proper placement of the implants is also very important. All patients may not experience every potential benefit. These points should be discussed with the surgeon before the operation.
